Anna and I were thrilled to get to tour the new pop-up American Girl store in downtown Portland this morning.
We knew it would be a small store, since it’s temporary, but it was fun experience. It is so cute to see all these girls, ranging from littles to teens, show up with eager faces, dolls in hand.
We took our good friends with us to the store, and were treated like VIPs! They let us in the store early, and gave us a tour of the shop.
Front and center at the new store is Grace, the Girl of the Year. Every year, American Girl features a contemporary girl for just that year. She is only available from January through December, then she’s gone.
This year’s girl is an American who spends the summer in France, and works in a patîsserie. So cute. I want to spend the summer in Paris!

Some key differences between the pop-up shop and a permanent store:
- There is no café in this store, and they don’t have birthday party capabilities. We have had some fun meals in the café in Lynnwood, and I know Anna would love to have a birthday party in the store if there was one in Portland.
- The salon is limited. There is only one salon chair for hair-dos and ear-piercing, but the other spa services that you would find at a larger store are not available. On opening weekend, the hair appointments booked up super quick! So either go first thing in the morning, or at the end of the day.
- No girls clothes. There are a few cute girl accessories available (scarves, ear muffs, diaries, pillow), but for the most part, it’s all-doll at this store. Anna has her eye on the “Truly Me” line, which includes matching girl and doll pajamas and travel gear that is perfect for sleep-overs. We will have to order it online!

We are thrilled to be able to give away a Grace doll, with her baking set!

Disclosure: American Girl gave us this doll and accessories set to give away. We got to enter the store early, but no compensation was received. All opinions are our own.
